Allegheny College Celebrates Open House
June 2009 - On April 17, the Vukovich Center for Communication Arts at Allegheny College celebrated its grand opening with a community open house and a film festival the following day. Massaro Corporation was the general contractor for the 40,000 square foot facility, which now enhances the campus with green features and a design that complements the surrounding existing structures. The architect on the project was Polshek Partnership Architects. The sustainable features include a “Green Roof” and a boardwalk made of Ipe Brazilian hardwood. The building is a teaching theater, with television and related disciplines, designed to be a hub for student and community activities.
The building’s scale responds to that of the older buildings on campus without sacrificing the identity of Allegheny’s progressive communication arts programs. The facility includes rehearsal and instructional spaces, technologically-advanced video production facilities, a 250-seat theater for hosting performances and public events, related support spaces including scene and costume shops and dressing rooms, and faculty office spaces.
