A Groundbreaking for the Renamed Josh Gibson Field

May 2008 - MASSARO CORPORATION enthusiastically joins Pirates Charities and the Josh Gibson Foundation in their efforts to renovate the Josh Gibson Field in order to encourage and revitalize little league baseball for Pittsburgh’s youth. Massaro Corporation is the architect and contractor performing design/build services for this project. The project includes field refurbishment, four new dugouts, and four sets of bleachers and fencing. As part of the team, Massaro Corporation will provide Pirates Charities construction services at a reduced fee and donate our design services at no cost.

On Tuesday, May 6, a ground breaking ceremony for the renamed Josh Gibson Field, located along Bedford Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, was held to celebrate construction commencement for the field’s renovations. The efforts to revitalize this historic field were led by Sean Gibson, great-grandson of the former Pittsburgh Crawfords and Homestead Grays standout. Pirates Charities, Del Monte Foods, The Grable Foundation, the Baseball Tomorrow Fund, the City of Pittsburgh, Sports Turf Specialties and Massaro Corporation will contribute to the renovation.

In addition to promoting baseball, Sean Gibson also has an educational vision for the field. He hopes to encourage the ballplayers to take an interest and learn about careers that surround baseball such as commentary, field maintenance and what is involved with managing a field. Construction will be complete in plenty of time for the first pitch of the 2009 season.
