February 2010 - Allegheny College North Village Phase 2 is a new student housing facility consisting of approximately 232 beds. The building is located on the Northern end of the campus and directly adjacent to North Village Phase 1 which was previously completed by Massaro. The project is on track to receive LEED Silver certification upon completion in July 2010. With a shell consisting of brick veneer, CMU bearing walls and precast concrete plank, this durable building has a number of sustainable features such as an HVAC system fed via 50 500′ deep geothermal wells located on confined site. The building will use 100% certified ‘green power’ through an agreement by Allegheny College and a green power utility in conjunction with high efficiency electric motors (for pumps, fans, etc.) and lighting occupancy sensors to reduce energy consumption. Water saving fixtures and dual flush toilets will also be used to save over 180,000 gallons of water per year. As with other LEED projects, the interior materials will consist of low VOC materials with recycled content and regional sources.
