Twenty high school students from after school programs, YouthWorks, Inc. and Urban Youth Action gathered at the Massaro Corporation offices on May 24, 2011 for “Professional Day”. This event is organized by Massaro and exposes young people to all of the careers within the construction sector. Joe Massaro III, President and COO, lead the interactive presentation which included six members of the Massaro team talking about their careers in construction and lending advice.  After lunch, the group headed to Point Park University for a tour of Frontier Hall and the public space enhancements project. Massaro Corporation is the general contractor on the project and 20 year Massaro superintendent and carpenter, David Capponi, lead the tour.

Professional Day is part of the “Massaro Serves”, the corporation’s systematic approach to community service and corporate citizenship. It is a yearly program of Massaro Corporation which welcomes over sixty students a year to the corporate office. Connecting under represented youth to careers in construction is one of the eight program areas of Massaro Serves. As part of this initiative, Massaro Corporation will be hosting two high school students from YouthWorks, Inc. for summer paid internships as well as an engineering college student from FAME (Fund for Advancement of Minorities Through Education).

Massaro Corporation is partnering with the Josh Gibson Foundation for the second annual Josh Gibson and Massaro Corporation Charity Softball Game to be held at the newly renovated Josh Gibson Field in the Hill District of Pittsburgh on Saturday, July 9. Competing in the tournament will be Massaro Corporation and local businesses and non-profit leagues.  Local celebrities will also be attending the event and lending their support. The event will feature the Pirate Parrot, great DJs, give-a-ways, face painting, free caricatures for kids and adults. There is no fee to attend the game. One pitch games will begin at 10:00 am until 3:00pm. The Josh Gibson Field is located behind Ammon Recreational Center, 2217 Bedford Avenue, next to Macedonia Church. The Josh Gibson Foundation is a private non-profit organization based in Pittsburgh that provides educational and motivational programming to families and youth to encourage education and responsibility as the means of improving oneself. The foundation offers after-school tutoring to inner-city youth, and since 2002 has provided more than $20,000 in college scholarships. Massaro was the general contractor for the new Josh Gibson field and values the partnership built with the foundation. All of the money raised through sponsorship and registration will be donated to the Josh Gibson Foundation. Massaro was also the general contractor for the Hill House Association’s Elsie H. Hillman Auditorium at Kaufmann Center.
