Massaro Serves

Massaro Serves

Massaro Serves is a systematic approach to Community Service and Corporate Citizenship.  It enables us to live our core values and achieve our strategic objectives.

We believe that our ability to live out our core values and serve the communities in which we work is our core competency.

Massaro Serves is comprised of 8 program areas:

1. Pro Bono Services — Consulting and other services provided by Massaro employees for non-profit organizations at no cost.

2.   Contributions, Sponsorship and Corporate Matching – Donations and other monetary contributions given to nonprofits for the purchase of sponsorships and donations.  Massaro will also match up to $500 any contribution made by an employee to an eligible nonprofit.

3.   United Way Campaign- The employee led campaign runs from November to April. The events, payroll contributions and a generous match from Massaro has resulted in an average donation of $175 per employee to the United Way.

4.  Days of Service – All office employees and field superintendents are given at least one paid day a year to participate in a day of service. There are eight days a year. Our employees lend a hand by landscaping, painting, making repairs, serving meals and what ever else is needed!

5.  Skilled Volunteerism –Massaro provides free construction to a needy non-profit or individual at least three times a year. This program provides opportunity for training and volunteering for our field employees. We are proud to partner with many organizations including the Pittsburgh Project.

6.  Outreach — Massaro is committed to being a leader in workforce diversity and inclusion in the office and field. Our strategic approach is to provide outreach and training for disadvantage businesses and mentoring activities which connect youth to careers in construction.

o        Construction/project based mentoring program is being created in partnership with YouthWorks, Inc. It will launch by Fall 2011.

o       We partner with YouthWorks Inc., an organization who builds a community solution to help young people whose potential might be overlooked to pursue employment and career development opportunities.  We provide two paid high school summer internships to students enrolled in the program who show an interest in construction.

o        We recruit interns with the hope of building a more diverse work force. To this end, we provide placement for at least minority college student intern in engineering or something related.

o        We reach out to high school students throughout the year with a program called “Professional Day”. Joe Massaro III, President and COO, leads the interactive presentation which includes conversations with several professionals from the Massaro team who represent the different careers available in the construction sector. We end the event with a tour of a job site lead by a superintendent.  Over 60 students are welcomed to our corporate office for this program each year.

o        Our employees are encouraged to participate in job shadow days, as volunteer at area schools as a speakers, tutors and advisers.

7.  Environmental Sustainability – Massaro Corporation is committed to being a responsible steward of our environmental resources. Recycling policies, energy saving infrastructure, composting, and an employee managed organic garden have all implemented to this end.

o        We give vegetables to organizations that feed the homeless and compost over twenty gallons of waste a month.

o        Our recycling efforts divert 1,000 tons of waste saving over 2,059 cubic yards of landfill annually.

o        We exceed our annual goals in reduce electric by 20% last year and have a goal of reducing it an additional 10% saving over 50,000 kwhph per year.

o        Massaro purchased a hybrid vehicle to encourage carpooling and to reduced the cost of purchasing gasoline by $1000 per year.

8. Fundraising for Friends – Massaro Corporation hosts three events a year to raise money for our friends in the nonprofit sector. The Carl Barnhart Memorial Golf outing is in it’s 14th year and raises over $10,000 for a non-profit of our choice.

CARL BARNHART Memorial Golf Outing

Massaro is pleased to announce the 14th annual Carl Barnhart Memorial Golf Outing will be held at Birdsfoot Golf Club on Saturday, September 17, 2011.

Each year, Massaro Corporation hosts this charity event to raise money in memory and honor of Carl Barnhart, a valued field supervisor who tragically died in an automobile accident.  For the past 12 years, Massaro Corporation has chosen a different non-profit client to be the recipient of this exciting and charitable event.

The 2011 beneficiary will be the Providence Connections.  Massaro Corporation was the general contractor for the renovations of their Providence Family Support Center in the North Side. They provide inner city children between the ages of six weeks and 13 years a stimulating and engaging child care experience. They service the entire family with highly trained family development specialists, who help families build bright futures

Over the past 14 years the event has grown in sponsorship and golfers.  We would like to thank all of our previous sponsors for contributing and making our events a great success.  We hope to see you once again on the golf course.  For more information, contact Hilary Brown, community affairs coordinator at 412.963.2800 x 304 or hbrown@massarocorporation.com.
